March 14, 2015 : Happy Pi Day!

If you’ve read this blog for any amount of time, then you probably don’t exist. In the event you are real, then you should know how much I enjoy Pi Day.

So take a few moments and think where you would be without Pi. You wouldn’t be able to calculate the area or circumference of circles, for starters. Can you live with that?

July 22, 2014 : Happy Pi Approximation Day!

My second favorite mathematical holiday is upon us… Pi Approximation Day!

Pi

Did you know, Babylonian mathematicians used 25/8 as an approximation for Pi in the early 19th century? Not only is this over 4 times less accurate compared with the 22/7, but it would have resulted in celebrating this holiday in August… preposterous.

March 14, 2014 : Happy Pi Day!

Happy Pi Day, everybody!

It’s that special day where it’s not only acceptable to be irrational, it’s preferred. So by all means – wear those sunglasses at night, watch that reality show, or think Illinois will be in the NCAA Tourney this year. You’re not supposed to make any sense!

July 22, 2013 : Happy Pi Approximation Day!

It’s not the real thing, but it’s a damn fine substitute… Happy Pi Approximation Day!

On this spectacular (and needlessly nerdy) day, have as much fun with 22/7 as humanly possible – just please don’t do any serious calculations with it.

March 14, 2013 : Happy Pi Day!

Happy Pi Day, everybody!

Pi Day. Whoa...

As always, be sure to enjoy this most momentous (and nerdy) of days. Feel free to use a calculator or spreadsheet to aid in the awesomeness.

The last few weeks have been devoted to animating the new short, which is progressing nicely. Hopefully more updates will follow. Plus, Illinois should be back in the Big Dance next week. Get ready for another year of not getting out of the first weekend.

April 9, 2012 : A Pi Sighting On The East Coast

Last week, I spent some time in Boston with Lady Pi, and this included a trip to MIT where I saw Jaume Plensa’s Alchemist. The sculpture is a thinking man comprised of numbers and math functions.

In addition to being an overall cool piece, I found the following symbol:

There were actually several Pi’s on the sculpture, which was pretty sweet to see. Overall, Boston was a fun time. Another fun thing I found was:

I did not eat here, although I was tempted. Rest assured, had it been Vegeta’s Vienna Hot Dogs, I would have been there faster than you could transform into a Level 2 Super Saiyan.

March 14, 2012 : Happy Pi Day!

Happy Pi Day! It’s truly a great day for nerds everywhere.

So be sure to thank your calculators today. Without them, how else would you know the digits of Pi? I mean, I guess you could just approximate it (blasphemy)… or memorize some of it (too hard)… or google it (too easy).

August 18, 2011 : Dielectric Pi

I liked the dielectric surface of the screwdriver base so much I wanted put it on a Pi model. So after a little Maya modeling… bam!

I am still testing out the stability of my computer, which at this point consists of using various software packages to see if it crashes at all. So far, so good. Maya’s pretty RAM intensive – so being able to spend over 2 hours in the program without any incident is definitely a good sign.

March 14, 2011 : Happy Pi Day!!!

Happy Pi Day, everyone.

Not much else is going on right now. But on the plus side, Illinois is back in the Big Dance – let the disappointment commence!

July 22, 2010 : Happy Pi Approximation Day

It’s about that time of year (pun totally intended) – Happy Pi Approximation Day!

An oldie but a goodie.

In case you were wondering,  the approximation of Pi is only 0.04% off of the real thing. It shouldn’t be used for any serious engineering calculations, but it’ll pass for a pretty solid estimate.
