September 25, 2013 : Closing The Book On Bleach

Good news! Bleach has finally come to a satisfactory point to stop watching! And it only took over 300 episodes, 7 years, and countless filler sagas. I could (and should) have stopped watching a long time ago, however it became an example of wanting to see things through. By the end of the second season, a story line was set up – sadly they just finished resolving it. While a lot longer than anticipated, it was satisfying to see how everything wrapped.

In many ways, Bleach (the series) is very tragic. It started out so promising – having a cool story and moving at a quick pace. Unfortunately, the anime eventually caught up with the manga, and that lead to mindless side story arcs and incredibly slow paced episodes to allow the manga time to generate new material. This killed the show’s momentum, and I am sure it turned many people off of it. Part of me wonders what might have been had it not slowed to a snail’s pace.

Still, I am glad I kept with it. Of course, I am also happy to be done with it. I believe there are two more seasons, with another 60 episodes; but much like the Buu saga and DragonBall GT, I will pretend they don’t exist.

June 25, 2013 : R.I.P.D. Looks A Lot Like A Lot Of Things

I’m not sure how long trailers for R.I.P.D. have been airing; but seeing as how it comes out next month, I was surprised I saw this for the first time tonight.

R.I.P.D. is based off a comic by Peter Lenkov, but many critics are claiming it to be a rip off of Men In Black and one of several other properties (ranging from Undead to Ghostbusters). While I can see the similarities, one could easily draw parallels to countless shows and movies. If I had to, I’d channel my love of anime and say it’s a mash up of Bleach and YuYu Hakusho.

While it isn’t completely original, it still looks interesting enough to me; and I’d like to think it’ll have its own personal spin on the genre. Plus, I have been a fan of Ryan Reynolds ever since Two Guys, A Girl, And A Pizza Place – so you can’t go wrong with that. Also, I am really glad they went with Jeff Bridges versus the original choice of Zach Galifianakis – but that’s just my irrational dislike of the guy. That notwithstanding, you can’t top The Dude so good casting call.

July 10, 2012 : Anime Back In Full Force

With Toonami’s recent return to Adult Swim, enjoyable anime is once again on TV. Deadman Wonderland has been impressive (although Cashern is still subpar). The concept is original, and it has moved at a very brisk pace. It’s unlikely Bleach will ever return to its prime, so hopefully Toonami will continue to pick up solid new anime. One show I’m hoping they get the rights to is Panty And Stocking With Garterbelt. The official trailer is below.

It’s obviously bizarre – yet again, that shouldn’t be too surprising since it’s by the creators of FLCL. The director of Garterbelt was also heavily involved in that show. The only drawback I can think about the series is that there isn’t any music from The Pillows.

January 6, 2011 : Archer Bob’s Alchemy Premieres

The cold weather got you down? Fear not, January is riddled with premieres guaranteed to lift the spirits, and it all starts this weekend!

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood’s new season starts back up this Saturday. With Bleach’s horrible filler episodes (aka the Captain Amagai Saga) currently airing, FMAB is by far the best anime Adult Swim has to offer.
Bob’s Burgers finally premieres on FOX this Sunday. If you’ve watched ten minutes of FOX in the last month, you’ve no doubt seen commercials for the show. If only they pimped out American Dad that much. Oh well… with H. Jon Benjamin involved, I’ll keep an open mind.
– Speaking of Mr. Benjamin, Archer’s second season kicks off January 27th on FX. The network is finally airing episodes from season 1 – granted, late at night on weekends – but it has reminded me how funny it is.

With respect to the production of SMD’s upcoming short, things are going smoothly (or as much as could be expected). A few more post-production items remain, but it is reasonable to see a finished product in a few weeks.

March 26, 2010 : Bugs Bunny, Meet Ichigo… Ichigo, Bugs Bunny

Apparently Warner Bros. is in the process of securing movie rights to “Bleach”. Peter Segal might produce (but not direct) the live-action movie about Ichigo and the Soul Society.

What's Up Doc?

The article also states that the studio is already developing an adaptation to “Akira” – that one, I’m indifferent about.

However, the Bleach project could be worthwhile. Skeptics might be worried with Segal’s involvement – particularly since his resume includes such non-genre-related films as Tommy Boy, Nutty Professor II, and 50 First Dates.

I will remain optimistic, hoping that Segal is trying to grow as a filmmaker. After all, Jon Favreau didn’t do many action films before Iron Man.

November 3, 2009 : Halloween: Bleach Style

It’s a few days late, but here’s a pic from Halloween.

The problem with dressing as anime character: dyeing your hair.

Going with an anime theme this year, the costumes were characters from Bleach. I was Ichigo Kurosaki (the main character from the show), and to my right was Byakuya Kuchiki. My brother’s costume was much more involved than mine, and he did an impressive job with it (particularly on such short notice).

As expected, very few people got the costumes – and by very few, I mean zero. Fortunately, we had digital references via the iPhone to show people we weren’t making things up. Plus it was a good conversation starter.

All in all, a fun Halloween. But that goes without saying.
