October 21, 2008 : Hustle Up!
After hearing some good reviews about the movie and briefly seeing parts of it at a bar, I decided to finally watch Kung Fu Hustle. Stephen Chow wrote, directed, produced, and starred in this 2005 flick that eventually became the highest grossing film in the history of Hong Kong – and supposedly inspired the Dreamworks’ movie Kung Fu Panda.Â
The movie is interesting, to say the least. It acts as a parody and homage to Hong Kong Action Cinema – apparently using several actors famous from that genre. However, not being very familar with those movies did not prove to be an issue for me, nor should it for anybody else. Plus, it did reference many American movies…including the Matrix Trilogy.
Overall, the movie was quite entertaining…albeit odd. I equate it to a live action FLCL (sans the cool Pillows music) due to how surreal it was. The special effects was one of the things I heard about frequently and how unique they were. And they definitely were, which really adds to the odd factor with the movie.
While the tone is not the same as a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; it is along the same lines of entertainment (plus, they share the same action choreographer). So as long as you enjoy action flicks – particularly ones that have a flair for creativity – you should check it out.

I looove Kung Fu Hustle. Can’t resist watching it anytime it’s on. If you liked it, you should definitely check out Shaolin Soccer: it’s practically the same movie but with a different plot. Wait, does that statement even make sense? What I should say is that the sense of humor and the martial arts choreography are very similar in the two movies.
